Notos is the divine power of the southern and southwestern wind — known as Lodos — and in mythology, he is one of the sons of the Titan Astraios and Eos, the goddess of dawn. His brothers are Zephyros, the western wind, and Boreas, the northern wind. As Notos is often associated with rain, he has long been seen as a symbol of abundance and fertility.
Every morning, the goddess Eos painted the horizon pink with her rose-colored fingers. Yet among her sons, one always woke later than the others: Notos. His brothers, Boreas and Zephyros, made themselves known immediately to the world — one fierce and sharp, the other gentle and sweet. But Notos was different. He never rushed.
At the end of a long summer, the earth had become scorched and exhausted, and the winds had fallen silent. Boreas, known for his harshness, had already withdrawn, while Zephyros, praised for his softness, had lost his strength. The sky grew heavy, though it still remained silent.
And then, Notos appeared on the horizon — the wind no one called for impatiently.
He did not arrive like a storm, nor with noise or fury. First, he slowly changed the air itself — softening the heat and deepening the sky. Then came a delicate breeze carrying the scent of earth, the salt of distant seas, and the promise of approaching rain.
Notos chose to hold back his clouds. He delayed the storm and slowed his wind. Fires were lit, smoke rose into the sky, and within the breeze brought by Notos, that smoke drifted in soft, graceful curves.
That evening, for the first time, people understood: this wind was not only a bearer of destruction, but also of slowness, conversation, and pleasure.
From that day on, Notos was remembered not merely as a storm-bearing wind, but also as a symbol of calm living, blue smoke, and refined pleasures.
